Hiking day with summit views and honey bliss
UNESCO World Heritage Site Tectonic Arena Sardona
Some days begin with an idea and end with tired legs, a full heart, and a smile on your face.
Today, I, Helena from Peaks Place in Laax, am taking you on one of my favorite tours: from Peaks Place directly to the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona.
A route that offers everything: alpine expanses, thundering waterfalls, regional honey, and the good feeling of being outdoors.
Whether you prefer to start comfortably by post bus or set off directly from Laax is up to you.
I opted for the more athletic option and was rewarded with views that I won’t forget anytime soon.
Hiking boots ready? Then let’s go, we’ve got plans!
Two paths, one goal
Your start right at base camp
Adventure awaits right outside the door: from Peaks Place, the trail leads you step by step up into another world. Full of mountain panoramas, glacier views, and pure nature.
I opt for the sporty option on foot: the trail leads from Laax up to Alp Nagens. Around 1,000 meters of elevation gain await. Sounds like a lot? It is. But the fresh mountain air, the constant murmur of the streams, and the anticipation of reaching Segnesboden make every step easier.
Those who prefer to save their energy (or who decided at breakfast to focus more on the view than the altitude today) can choose the more comfortable option: take the 125 from Laax Rancho to Alp Nagnes.
And just like that, you’ve elegantly avoided 1,000 meters of altitude. 😉
Sardona UNESCO World Heritage Site
Traveling through the oldest part of the Alps
As soon as you reach the top of the hill, the landscape opens up. You know immediately that something is different here. Wide, open, somehow magical. You walk across soft mats, small streams babbling beside you, and the sound of a waterfall echoing in the distance. And while your feet keep moving, your mind suddenly comes to a standstill.
Welcome to the lower Segnesboden. In the heart of the UNESCO World Heritage Site Sardona. Where 250 million years of Earth’s history lie open before you. No museum. No guided tour. Just you, stone, and time.
And if you’re still not amazed enough, Martinsloch is just a short detour away.
Sweet summit bliss
Honey on the high trail
And then suddenly it’s there. Almost too inconspicuous for such a special moment: a small wooden box with a glass front in the middle of the Segnesboden. Inside: jars of honey, filled with golden yellow energy straight from here.
The honey comes from bees that live up here. If you want it, you have to earn it. You can only pay with cash or Twint.
Maybe that’s why it tastes so special: because it not only comes from the region, but from the middle of your hiking day.
Take a jar with you as a sweet reminder of a really good day.
A hut stopover with a view
The Segnes Hut
Anyone who has hiked this far deserves a break – and the Segneshütte is the perfect place for it.
On the sun terrace with a view of the Tschingelhörner, the soup tastes twice as good – and the cold drink three times as good. Inside, there are simple, honest dishes, outside, the perfect place to unwind.
Next door, you’ll also find a small information stand explaining why Sardona is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Full? Great. Now it’s time to tackle the final stretch.
From the hiking trail to the whirlpool grotto
From Flims back to base camp
