Winter width at the upper Segnesboden
Snowshoeing in the UNESCO World Natural Heritage Site
Wide open spaces, silence, and a landscape that writes history.
The upper Segnesboden lies in the middle of a UNESCO World Heritage Site and feels almost unreal in winter.
That’s exactly where I was, Helena on the move: with snowshoes, time in my luggage, and a landscape that becomes more expansive with every step. No hustle and bustle, just winter, vastness, and that special moment when everything else suddenly becomes quieter.
Are you ready to be enchanted by a winter experience?
Then come with me to the upper Segnesboden, where vastness and silence tell their own story.
When the journey to the top becomes part of the experience
Getting there
It starts right outside the apartment door.
From Peaks Place, I take the bus to the Flims mountain railways (free with the guest card).
In Flims, I board the Flem X. This is where the change of perspective begins: the journey to Cassons takes around 20 minutes and climbs 1,194 meters. With each section, the landscape becomes wider, more alpine, and more impressive.
Houses are left behind, rocks and snow move closer. Your gaze automatically wanders outside. This gondola ride is more than just a way to get to the top; it sets the mood for what is yet to come.
When I arrive at Cassons, I know that my summit experience has long since begun!
Before taking the first step
Arriving & looking around
At the top of Cassons, it’s worth stopping for a moment. Not to get your bearings, but to look around and marvel at the view!
The landscape opens up immediately. Vast expanses, striking rock formations, and clear winter air that makes everything look sharper. Take a deep breath and enjoy the view before strapping on your snowshoes.
The route is easy to follow: pink wooden sticks mark the path and provide safety without disturbing the landscape. I follow them naturally, step by step, out into the vastness.
That’s what makes this start so enjoyable: you don’t have to search or think. You just set off and let the surroundings guide you.
On the road in the great outdoors
Where space seems boundless
The upper Segnesboden
Everything changes again with the upper Segnesboden. The path becomes flatter, the horizon wider. I stand on the plateau and feel as if space suddenly has no boundaries.
The snow lies calm and untouched before me. My steps slow down, almost automatically. Up here, the landscape carries me. No single point pushes itself into the foreground; everything seems open and clear.
I continue across the upper Segnesboden and notice how quiet it is becoming. My gaze wanders, lingers, then moves on again. That’s exactly what makes this place so special: you don’t have to search for anything. The vastness does it for you.
The moment after
Why this tour remains
At some point, I turn around. The upper Segnesboden continues to have an effect, even as I slowly walk away.
What remains are countless images and a special feeling of space, tranquility, and clarity. That is exactly what makes this snowshoe hike so special. It demands nothing, but gives so much.
When I arrive back down later, that’s exactly what I take with me. A calm mind, tired legs, and the certainty of having experienced a place that impresses even without words.
